11 PM, Wednesday March 8
I have arrived in Nairobi! It is warm, very humid, and raining tonight. The driver who brought us in from the airport said it has been raining hard for a week now, which people are very happy about because they’ve been having a very bad drought.

I met one of my Earthwatch teammates in the airport in London. She is from New York State, is a retired phys. Ed. Teacher, and has been to Kenya several times before. She volunteers at a private catholic school in NY State that has started a school here in Kenya and she has been helping with that. The students at the school in New York help to raise money for the Kenyan school. Recently they raised $2000 so a well could be drilled and now the school will have water! Things that we take for granted mean a great deal to people here—things like rain and running water. Anyway, I was glad to meet up with someone who knows her way around.

Our driver suggested some things we might want to do tomorrow. One option was to go to a place where we could see giraffes. Peggy said that she has fed giraffes and they have very long tongues. Our driver asked if she kissed one! Some people do you know! Would you like to kiss a giraffe?

We will meet some of the other members of our expedition team tomorrow night when they arrive, and officially begin our Earthwatch experience on Friday morning. Tomorrow is a day to rest or be tourists… or both.

About me

  • Hi! My name is Shayne Russell, and I'm the Library Media Specialist at Kenneth R. Olson Middle School in Tabernacle, NJ. Come along with me on an adventure to Kenya, Africa! We will be working as volunteer researchers, side-by-side with scientists who are studying the endangered Grevy's Zebra. Let's see what research looks like... outside of the library!
